Republican Senator Jeff Flake from Arizona is supporting an extension of DACA to allow recipients who qualify to continue to receive work authorization and deferral of deportation and a new version of the Dream Act which would be a “pathway to citizenship”. In the opinion of our immigration lawyers a ten year program to apply for permanent residence is much too long a period of time.

Moreover, there are officials in the White House who are opposed to any extension of DACA and no pathway to citizenship for past DACA reciepints. Congress has only 5 months left to pass legislation before DACA will no longer become available. Many of our clients, whose DACA benefits expired between September 5 and March 5, 2017 had to rush in order to file for their DACA renewals prior to October 5th. However, at this time our immigration attorneys are hoping to find other ways our DACA clients can apply for legal status in the U.S., such as through marriage to a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
